first of all, before I begin, no, I dont hate
discord because hes a different species than fluttershy and thats why they shouldnt
be together, its a point made in later seasons of my little pony that species
are capable of being together regardless of their shapes and quirks. Regardless,
I do still have issues with that, not with different species being together,
but with discord on its own.
Now,
ever since I was a kid I was told discord was
the most badass, powerful and smartest character in all of my little pony, a
brony's favorite so to speak, not only was he a fan favorite but he lead one of
the most well written villain episodes in season 2, and by that point I thought
his character was fun and just fine, he was the embodiment of chaos and the
spirit of disharmony, a perfect opposite to everything the mane six stood for.
not only was he written to be essentially
against the elements of harmony, but also to be against peace and friendship in
the land, casting such large amounts of destruction that it led to ponies being
put against each other.
so yeah, cool character, he made the mane six
act completely unlike themselves and was only capable of being defeated by the
elements of harmony and the friendship held between the ponies, so that leads
me to the next question:
Why the fuck did they think the most powerful,
unwilling, betraying, rude and manipulative motherfucker in the entire show up
to that point would be redeemable?
because sure, I can see it, if you were to get
rid of his powers to cause such chaos, if his views on life were changed to be
different, but this is not something that is changed, in fact, his exact same
views stay the same, do not change not fucking once, and stay the same until
the end of the show.
The slightest difference we get is that he no
longer feels like ruining all of equestria, which sure he didnt ruin the
entire land, but he literally did ruin multiple places time and time again past
season 2.
And the only thing that keeps him from not
destroying the entire world? A shy, anxious driven pony that half the time
seems completely incapable of stopping him in the first place.
Case 2: fluttershy
my personal theory is that the only reasons
why the princesses would be sane enough to leave an agent of chaos, a creature
so evil that it literally led the world into endless madness, to nothing but a
little kind pony, is because they knew it would keep him in place.
I dont believe that the princesses think
discord is any better than he once was, in fact we see MULTIPLE characters not
believe the same, strongest being twilight sparkle, who keeps him in check much
better than fluttershy ever did.
fluttershy was not made to control a beast
that only seemed to by sheer coincidence become obsessed with her, by season 3
her anxiety issues were not even fully resolved, so honestly I do just think
this is poor writing on M.A Larson's part, and also just because of the
popularity discord had held over the fandom by that point.
by season 3 the my little pony fandom and the
phenomenon of bronies was more than well established, and stereotypes have been
set about what your favorite mane six meant you were like for years up to this
point.
So, putting the smartass, strongest, cooler
than everyone brony fan favorite with fluttershy, the pony that if someone had
told you were your favorite at the time, probably meant you wanted her to be
your submissive wife? The pony that was known as having the most amount of porn
and had the most fans? The one that nerdy bronies and social outcasts related
to because of her anxiety?
Smart fucking move Larson.
I dont mean this as in they made this
decision just for the sake of bronies playing favorites, I know that the
pandering only really started a season later, but holy fuck it makes sense why
so many bronies loved the ship and why things like bride of discord even
spawned in the first place.
regardless of the ways in which someone were
to enjoy the ship between these two, there was a clear chemistry set by fandom:
it was a case of a beast and his beauty, a king and his maiden, the all shy,
weak and ever so loving and patient fluttershy, and the destroyer of worlds
discord, who could not be stopped if he really wanted to get his ways.
Its a shit relationship, not only does it
hinder on fluttershy's development on becoming independent of her own troubles
and anxieties (something that she does completely by herself in most episodes
without the mention of discord ANYWHERE in sight BY. THE. WAY) but keeps her on
the down low, taking care of an immature, aggressive and possessive beast that
literally strangles her relationships, her possibilities, and her surroundings.
Peace and chaos are not total opposites, chaos
and harmony are, you can find positive forms of chaos in characters like pinkie
pie, but her harms are not malintentioned, while I believe discord's are. Discord
takes advantage of people, situations, and the weak, and his ways of
manipulating life around the ponies and causing chaos under a more minimal form
never have any long term repercussions.
He is established to not care for the other
mane six, for the princesses, and for the state of equestria, it is only when
fluttershy is involved. Because discord is obsessed with fluttershy to the
point that he damages her life to make it all about himself.
Case 3: the proof in the pudding
The first of his appearances past his banishment on season 2 is on the
season 3 episode "keep calm and flutter on", this is where he is
intended to be fully reformed, yet this is something we will never see.
I think its a common joke that princess celestia never seems to finish
her jobs, or be there when time is needed, but the fact that discord is left to
the mane six to be taken care of, with simply a small spell that he could have
easily broken out of - "being incapable of taking the elements of harmony
and hiding them" - something that would have proven to be completely
useless regardless of the elements a couple seasons onwards, is just fucking
stupid.
You're telling me celestia, the princess that banished her own sister to
the moon for thousands of years regardless of the fact that she was not even a
quarter in powers to discord, thought he could be reformed? Was it because she
knew that he would break free again? Putting this much pressure on twilight
sparkle and friends, who had barely managed to break free of discord's spell
was it not for twilight herself is pure nonsense.
the only thing that keeps discord together from breaking into pure chaos
across the land - besides celestia literally returning to give twilight the
elements of harmony as an emergency plan, because yes, even she distrusted the
fucking thing she brought to possibly reform - is fluttershy being gullible and
overly kind with him, and this wouldnt be the first either, proving that
discord would not learn of respecting fluttershy's wishes or patience.
and sure, one could say that discord does at least maintain himself in
place, but this is already broken by the beginning of season 4, where discord
literally planted seeds that would have destroyed the tree of harmony, the one
thing that keeps the elements of harmony alive, its beyond me how the only
reason why we are to believe that he didnt purposely leave these seeds to grow
and betray the ponies - even through all the teasing and joking he does in the
entire episode - is simply because he had forgotten of their stay underneath
the earth, his reasoning of this all being put as a way of teaching twilight a
lesson feels more like an excuse than a genuine reason, and discord is known
for being a common liar.
during this same season, we see discord act with only slight preference
to the ponies: bothering twilight while she had the chance to visit one of her
only friends with a fake disease as a ways to earn her trust (something that
twilight never fully does), he sides with tirek with taking the power of all
three pony races, takes over canterlot, and is even stupid enough to be
betrayed by tirek himself, and its only when the entire world and his yellow
pony obsession are at risk, that he is "truly reformed".
this is not to say that discord doesnt actually feel any remorse for
his actions in these episodes, but these are things that he does not learn to
simply not do, the blue flu episode is much alike the dungeons and dragons
episode seen in season 6, and by the end of that same season its seen that
discord did not care for almost all of equestria being trapped by the
changelings, not until fluttershy was involved.
I suppose we can also correlate this to the poor writing seen in later
seasons, that completely ruins his character, I dont think discord is a bad
character by any sense of the word up until season 4, but by season 5 (where
his popularity is well established by fans) that he is broken as a character,
and his reformation goes completely to shit.
as the earlier tweets established, discord was meant to stay as a
morally grey, not always helpful yet still caring sort of character, but that
whole character is thrown out the window once it is shown multiple times that
he does not care for all of equestria, he simply plays favorites, and if he
could keep those favorites under his care and ruin everything else, its most
likely he would.
Case 3.5: the evils committed
I think season 5, and in the episode "make new friends but keep
discord", is where things go down the line, so quickly, that it is
surprising how easily one could completely destroy discord's character in a
single episode.
discord stops caring about fluttershy's opinion, he becomes possessive,
he ruins an entire event simply due to fluttershy talking to someone else other
than him, and he almost throws a pony into a different dimension because of
reasons that are so pathetic, it makes him look like hes throwing a tantrum,
the same tantrums he threw in season. Fucking. Two.
shipping fluttershy with tree hugger I believe is almost like wanting
the best for fluttershy in this situation, because between them and discord,
which one do you think is the healthier relationship? What kind of chemistry
are we establishing for these two? It is literally because of tree hugger's
ability that discord's near destruction of the entire castle of canterlot and
all ponies inside it are stopped, and yet discord almost sends tree hugger into
a completely different dimension that could have killed her.
Of course this is all ignored for a silly "ha-ha look its puppets
so random" joke.
He apologizes, but this just comes to show that discord needs more than
a couple takes to really learn a lesson, and that for the most part, his
apologies arent genuine.
These are not the actions of someone who cares for fluttershy, these are
the actions of someone who is utterly obsessed with fluttershy to the point
that he does not allow her to have other friends besides her, and its not
surprising that we do not see tree hugger after this episode past background
scenes and mentions.
I don't understand what kids or anyone watching are even supposed to
take away from fluttershy and discord's relationship up to this point anyways,
hell, not even up to this point but more like their entire relationship as a
whole, should one take advantage of the patience and forgiveness of their
friends instead of dealing with the effects of messing with someone's life? not
once does fluttershy stop and leave discord to reflect on his own actions, he
is always forgiven, being punished by fluttershy only slightly before being
forgiven regardless.
in "what about discord?" he literally fucks with twilights
emotions, all under the idea of "teaching twilight a lesson",
something that he would do multiple times along the series and would show that
he believes that he has the higher ground and knowledge over twilight sparkle,
the princess of fucking friendship, which he is teached wrong over and over
again, he literally does this by the beginning of season 4 as well, not even
two seasons over and yet he continues to repeat his exact same behaviors, the
only difference here is that discord is put in his place by essentially separating
twilight from her friends, and only seems to get permanent bliss from his
friendship with the ponies once he is forgiven by twilight herself.
in dungeons & discords, he puts Spike and Big Macintosh in
situations of danger by placing them in a real life universe of ogres and
ougliettes, something that scared both of them and of course angered them, the
only time where discord even considers his own actions is by the time that they
punish him, saying they only invited him because they felt pity for him, by the
end of it discord simply joins as a way of stroking his own ego and making
himself the most op character.
theres not a lot else I can add to this episode because not only is it
terribly written, it is pure fan service to a group of people that have no
relation to the my little pony community and only seemed to be liked because of
its shittily inserted references, I really hate this episode and discord only
adds to it.
by the end of season 6, discord is only seen joining starlight glimmer
and Trixie from the hands of all of pony kind being trapped under the
changelings kingdom because of fluttershy, in fact its made very specific
multiple times in the show that the only reason why he had even accompanied
them was because of fluttershy. he argues with Trixie and only finished with a
slightly more positive passive-aggressive frenemies relationship that is never
established again, all because Trixie manages to "prove herself" to
him, I would say that discord's inclusion was at least necessary to save the
ponies from the changelings wrath, but thats not even true.
Why? Because discord is seemingly so stupid without his powers that he manages
to get himself trapped by multiple changelings disguised as fluttershy, he
knows fluttershy so poorly that he is incapable of noticing that none of them
are the real one, and is simply led by his poorly handled emotions in pandering
to her in emotions of distress.
by season seven, and in celestial advice specifically, discord literally
tortures twilight to come up with a plan for starlight glimmer in the near
future, and warns everyone of a surprise that twilight had not even established
for the celebratory event, all because he wanted starlight to be roommates with
her, which is something that doesnt even make sense because in later seasons
discord is seen fucking with starlight simply because of the fact that she is
not twilight and will never be under his eyes. this episode alone made me
despise discord as much as I do and is the singular reason why Im even making
this, you need to watch the episode to even understand how manipulative, rude,
and shitty his behavior is in this episode, all after having "saved"
equestria from destruction under the changelings.
From this point onward I have not even watched the episodes he was in to
give full context, but heres a list of other shitty behavior he commits down
the line, simply from the context given to me from the wiki:

completely incapable of
understanding fluttershy's love for him in "Discordant Harmony" by
changing himself to be more normal, discord only realizing that fluttershy
likes him the way he is by season fucking seven is more than hilarious, also
proves that even if discord were to be reformed it would be all for nothing.

uncaring for his friend's
feeling on his romantic relationship, discord pushes him to play ogres and
ougliettes, even when big mac believes his significant other may want to break
up with him, discord pushes the envelope to have him break up with her first,
an extremely shitty thing to do.

regardless of the fact
that starlight glimmer cares for discord as much as having him in one of the
pictures in her mirror, discord sabotages starlight glimmer's life in "a
matter of principals" simply because of twilight sparkle not being in
charge of the school of friendship, something that he should not even care for
because he is not the one that established it. he fucks with her lessons and
activities and even haunts the students out of the school once he is banned
from school grounds, all because he threw a tantrum over not being invited to
the grand opening of the school (and not because twilight sparkle wasnt in
charge, actually). he even had purposely taken twilight and friends out of the
charge of the school (which is oh so conveniently changed at last minute, I
wonder if the writers realized maybe they should have the mane six teach
friendship instead of the reformed villain all of a sudden?) because discord
supposedly wanted all of this to happen, seemingly causing chaos for the sake
of chaos.

In best gift ever,
discord puts fluttershy and friends in a situation of danger simply because he
wanted fluttershy to save the day (?), all under the guise of giving rainbow
dash a good gift for fluttershy.

by season nine, the last
season, its shown that discord has not learned to care for his friends and the
land he lives in at all, by refusing to help the mane six against king sombra,
its only when they lose the elements of harmony and fluttershy is almost harmed
that he pushes the mane six forward, something that they could have completely
done by themselves regardless of discord being there, worst part? Discord
really believes his speech saved the day, because he wasnt even truly hurt by
king sombra's power, opting out completely of truly helping the mane six all
for the sake of being seen as an inspiration.

Supposedly
"accidently" causes chaos in the apples he puts messages in "the
big mac question", turning them into a giant apple monster. This one is
just fucking stupid and seems to make discord off as if he cant even control
his own magic.

By the end of the season,
discord is the sole reason why chrysalis, tirek and cozy glow take over all of
equestria, all for his weird, unnecessary plans to make twilight the ruler,
something that would have happened with the passage of time anyways as
established with celestia and Lunas retirement.
Case 4: conclusion
I dont think discord is a bad person, I dont think discord's ideas
were still to take over the world especially by later seasons, but his
willingness to fuck with other people so badly and him never having any
consequences for those actions tells me more than I should know. discord is not
a fully reformed character, and he should not be a weight left on fluttershy to
carry, he does not help fluttershy as a character, and fluttershy is only there
for him as a leash to keep him stable, if fluttershy were to ever die off as a
character or were simply not there, its more than possible that discord would
wreck chaos across the lands and have no mercy for doing so, as its established
he does not actually care for the other mane six, and seems to not even know
that much about fluttershy herself, he just pushes things forwards in a
dimension that he knows that, if he played the cards right, would mean he'd get
to stay with fluttershy forever after.
he pushes big mac's relationship almost in a weird teasing "big mac
and fluttershy is not canon now" way, he goes back and forth in twilight's
view of him, and does not even seem to care much for the people who show
respect for him but dont go out of their way to show devotion.
Chaos can be reformed, but when it is no longer chaos, and discord will
never be not chaos, because it is what he essentially means and lives for, he
is unharmony, he is unkindness, and he is the opposite of friendship.
also to add to the comment I made at the beginning, its not because hes
a draconequus, its because hes standing in two legs and double the size as
fluttershy, and thats just fucking weird man.
